Revolutionizing AgriTech Through Alternative Proteins
Vision
We are revolutionizing the FoodTech industry and slashing greenhouse gas emissions through impact investing in alternative protein technologies.
Global Challenge
Traditional agriculture and food systems have an year-on-year increasing carbon footprint. They hold significant responsibility for the exploitation of natural resources, water scarcity, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. This has been further exacerbated by disrupted food supply chains due to the Covid-19 pandemic and led to unprecedented food shortages.
Solution
Alternative proteins hold significant promise in dramatically improving the productivity and efficiency of our food system and the greening of our economy. It is one step closer towards decoupling growth and environmental harm. The market is predicted to grow more quickly, to 16% of the market in 2035. In 2020 alone, the Alternative Protein industry raised $3.1 billion in investments. More supportive policies and regulations and the surge in investments over the past year signal a growing appetite for climate-friendly investments that reap returns that benefit both investors and their communities.
At Sayris, we are working with tech-driven companies focused on innovative alternative protein technology to meet ESG standards while fuelling our food systems.
Our Impact and Market
By turning to alternative proteins to replace between 10% and 15% of the meat consumed by 2030, total greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture could drop by between 5% and 8%, freshwater withdrawals for agriculture could be reduced by between 7% and 12%, and between 5% and 10% of the total land used for agriculture could be freed up for other uses. In addition to expanding consumer choice, investments in alternative protein innovation will stimulate economic growth, create jobs, reduce global health risk, and contribute to food safety and security.
Our Investment
We have raised over USD25 million in 2021 for a plant-based egg company whose plant-based egg substitute innovation has reduced water use by 98% when compared to your average chicken egg. We are similarly working with multiple tech-based companies whose sustainable, plant-fuelled innovations are imperative to making drastic climate action and healing our planet. However, due to private placements, our other investments are currently confidential.
